Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward’s community manager announced last weekend a couple of disturbing news about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Apparently IW intends to make use of their matchmaking service, IWNet. The usual server browser will be gone and instead we’ll have an Xbox-like matchmaking service which will find games for us. The forums were on fire when countless angry CoD fans started posting about this unpopular move.
The support for dedicated servers will be completely removed, which basically means there won’t be any clan servers and quite possibly no user made game mods or maps. Clearly this disappointed many players, especially the ones who already pre-ordered the game. Players are also already speculating about a possible monthly subscription to IWNet or some other form of financial gain for Infinity Ward, as their server costs will undoubtedly increase. There has been no official word on that but it’s definitely plausible.
How big of an impact this change will have on the franchise and the Call of Duty community is not yet clear but it appears Infinity Ward, just like nearly every other game developer, does not care about the community and loyal fans but rather tries to squeeze as much money from us as possible.
